Jennifer Roy talking with a client during a therapy session

Do you take insurance?

I am an out-of-network provider and do not bill insurance directly. If you have out-of-network mental health benefits, I can provide a monthly superbill you can submit to your insurer for possible reimbursement.

What is a superbill?

A superbill is an itemized receipt for your sessions that you can submit to your insurance company. If your plan includes out-of-network benefits, your insurer may reimburse a portion of the cost directly to you.

How much does therapy cost?

Individual sessions are $225 for 45 minutes or $295 for 60 minutes. Couples and family sessions are $295 for 60 minutes, $375 for 75 minutes, and $450 for 90 minutes. Payment is due at the time of each session.

Do you offer lower rates based on financial need?

Yes. I reserve several sliding scale spots for those unable to afford my full fee. Contact me for more information.

Do you offer both in-person and telehealth therapy?

Yes. Sessions are available by secure video for clients anywhere in California, and in person at my San Francisco office.

What can I expect in a first session?

The first session is a relaxed conversation about what brings you to therapy and what you're hoping for. There's no pressure to share more than you're ready to, and it's also a chance to see whether we feel like a good fit.

How often will we meet?

During the initial phase of therapy, we generally meet once per week. I've found that meeting less frequently at the start significantly slows the work we can accomplish together. Later in therapy, some clients choose to shift to every other week or monthly, whether to support maintenance or to ease the transition out of therapy. Every situation is different, and we can discuss what makes sense for you.

What issues do you specialize in?

My primary areas of focus are grief and loss, spirituality and meaning-making, relationships, and life transitions. I also specialize in anxiety, stress and burnout, ADHD in relationships, multicultural identity and belonging, trauma, addiction recovery, living with chronic illness, foster parenting, adult children of emotionally immature caregivers, and self-esteem. My approach is integrative and trauma-informed, drawing on humanistic, strength-based, attachment focused, narrative, psychodynamic, family systems, and somatic methods.

What is your cancellation policy?

I ask for at least 48 hours' notice to cancel or reschedule a session. Sessions canceled with less than 48 hours' notice may be charged the full fee.
